About Tokyo Shelf Report

An independent, monthly observation of Japanese cosmetics retail, written in English for people who need ground-level facts.

Why this report exists

Most reports on the Japanese cosmetics market forecast and analyze at the macro level: five-year growth projections, category sizing, consumer segmentation. Those are useful for strategic planning. They are not useful for a buyer deciding whether to carry a new drugstore hit next quarter, or a product developer benchmarking packaging formats against what's on shelves today.

Tokyo Shelf Report fills that gap. It is a monthly, ground-level observation of what is actually sitting on Tokyo cosmetics shelves, what officially launched this month, and how rankings moved — all translated into English and delivered on a predictable schedule.

The people who find it most useful are the ones who need facts fast enough to inform decisions, and who cannot read or travel to Japan themselves.

Our approach

We observe. We don't forecast. We don't conduct interviews, run consumer surveys, or project market size. Every data point in the report comes from a publicly accessible source that we cite directly.

We publish the full list of stores we visit, brands we track, and data sources we use. Transparency on method is part of the product — subscribers should be able to evaluate the quality of every observation by knowing exactly where it came from.

Editorial independence

Tokyo Shelf Report accepts no sponsored content, no paid placements, and no affiliate arrangements with any brand or retailer. Subscription revenue is our only source of funding for the report.

We observe stores and brands without their knowledge or cooperation, and we report what we see regardless of commercial relationships anywhere else.
