The company was founded in 1599 as a salt manufacturing business and began pharmaceutical operations in 1918. The Bittern Pharmaceutical Industry Association was established in 1935, followed by incorporation as a joint-stock company in January 1944. Magnesium sulfate manufacturing commenced in 1946, with an Osaka branch opening in 1951 and dried product manufacturing beginning in 1960. A name change and sodium bisulfate production launch occurred in 1965, and a Tokyo branch was established in 1966. Synthetic magnesium sulfate technology was developed in 1968. AdBlue certification was obtained in 2007, the bath product business was launched in 2014, and Halal certification was acquired in 2021.
