  In 1948, founder Hisao Kitahara established the agarweed wholesaler "Kitahara Shoten" in Tokyo and began sales to agar manufacturers. In 1956, a manufacturing plant and warehouse were acquired in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, and production of kaku-kanten and fine agar began. Kitahara Sangyo Co., Ltd. was incorporated in 1961. In 1974, production of kaku-kanten and fine agar began at the Ina Plant in Nishi-Haruchika, Ina City. In 1990, Shigenobu Kitahara was appointed President, and in 1992, the secondary-processed agar product brand "Kanten no Megumi" was launched. In 2000, internet sales began and a new agarweed processing facility was built. In 2006, commercial powdered agar ranked third in the Rakuten Ichiba annual overall ranking. North American sales began in 2015, and in 2024, Masahiro Gomi was appointed President.
