Company History of Kobe Tea Co., Ltd.

  Founded in 1925 as Sudō Shinji Trading Co., Ltd., a food wholesaler, the company was reorganized into a joint-stock corporation in October 1955. In 1957, it became a designated manufacturing facility for UK-based Lipton and commenced tea production. In 1959, the company relocated its headquarters and factory to a newly constructed facility in Fukiai Ward, Kobe, and began instant coffee manufacturing. In 1961, it introduced Japan's first automatic tea bag packaging machinery and initiated domestic tea bag production. The company was renamed Sudō Co., Ltd. in 1967. A new factory was constructed on Rokko Island in 1984. Sales under the Kobe Kōcha brand commenced in 1993. The company sustained damage from the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, subsequently closing its food wholesale division in 1996 to focus exclusively on OEM tea manufacturing. In 2006, it was renamed Kobe Kōcha Co., Ltd. and obtained organic JAS certification. Fair Trade certification was acquired in 2008. Operations of the Tarui Masaru Division commenced in 2023.
