  Kawada Shokuhin was founded in 1921 in Himi, Toyama Prefecture as Kawada Shoten, initially operating a retail business for alcoholic beverages, food products, and general merchandise. In 1947, the company established an ice cream manufacturing and wholesale division. In 1969, it began contract manufacturing for a major ice cream producer. In 1987, the company opened its first gelato shop in a shopping center within Toyama Prefecture. In 1998, it launched the production of local gelato products utilizing regional ingredients. The company expanded to the Rakuten Marketplace in 2009 and opened another gelato shop at Himi Banya-gai in 2012.
