  Tokai Sugar Industry Co., Ltd. was founded in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture in July 1958. The company began manufacturing hydrous crystalline glucose in October 1958, introduced enzymatic saccharification methods in August 1959, and commenced production of anhydrous crystalline glucose in September 1960. Japanese Pharmacopoeia-grade glucose production started in September 1966. Mie Kogyo Co., Ltd. was established in March 1967 (later renamed Aitoh Co., Ltd.). San-ei Toka received the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry Award in April 1971. Isomerized liquid sugar production began in November 1973. Aitoh and Tokai Sugar Industry merged in May 1978, and the Chita Plant (now the head office plant) in Chita, Aichi Prefecture was completed in January 1979. San-ei Toka Co., Ltd. was established in January 1987, and the business was transferred from Aitoh in March 1987. The original lactic acid bacteria plant was completed in June 1994. The company received the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Award for Food Hygiene Excellence in November 1999 and the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry Technology Award in August 2000. ISO 9001 certification was acquired in August 2001. A business partnership with Nisshi Co., Ltd. was established in April 2006, and San-ei Toka was recognized as an Aichi Brand Company in January 2008. The merger with Nisshi was completed in April 2010. The Bio Plant Phase 1 was completed in March 2011, and ISO 14001 certification was obtained at all business sites in April 2011. The Phase 2 Dextrin equipment at the Second Plant was completed in November 2014. Halal certification was obtained for specific products in October 2015, and FSSC22000 certification for the head office plant was obtained in November 2015. The Bio Plant Phase 2 was completed in April 2016, followed by FSSC22000 certification for the Second Plant and Bio Plant in November 2016. ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications were relinquished in February 2018. All shares were transferred to Showa Industries Co., Ltd. in December 2020. Kosher certification was obtained for certain products in June 2021. In July 2023, FSSC22000 certification for the Bio Plant was consolidated with the head office plant certification. The Innovation Center is scheduled to open in September 2025.
