Unshū mikan (うんしゅうみかん / 温州みかん) — Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu) — is Japan's volume-leading citrus crop and a defining winter fruit. Originating in Kagoshima (Satsuma) in mid-1500s and exported under the 'Satsuma' name to North America (where it is established as a winter retail category in the US and Canada). Wakayama (Arida-mikan GI), Ehime, Shizuoka (Mikkabi-mikan), Kumamoto, and Saga lead domestic production. The OEM applications are extensive: as fresh whole mikan retail (volume autumn-winter category), as frozen mikan, as mikan juice (Wakayama Arida brand and Itoen are major), as mikan-flavored confectionery and gummi, as cross-border 'Satsuma' export to North America, and as β-cryptoxanthin FFC functional food (mikan is the leading natural source — multiple registered FFC products focus on bone health and immune function claims based on β-cryptoxanthin content).
