Ingredient profile
Saccharina japonica extract is produced by water or hydro-alcoholic extraction of dried Saccharina japonica blades. The extract contains polysaccharides including alginates and laminarin, minerals, free amino acids including glutamic acid, and fucoidan at trace-to-moderate levels.
The species was previously classified under Laminaria; older INCI entries using Laminaria Japonica Extract refer to the same species.
OEM applications
In Japanese cosmetics, kombu extract appears in facial toners, essences, body washes, and hair products. The ingredient carries marine and coastal-Hokkaido storytelling — Hokkaido being the primary kombu production region.
In food applications, dried kombu is the essential dashi ingredient, used alongside katsuobushi (bonito flakes) in the base stock of Japanese cuisine. Food-grade kombu is regulated separately from cosmetic-grade extracts.

Listed in the JSCI Japanese Cosmetic Ingredient Codex under コンブエキス and permitted as a cosmetic ingredient.

FAQ for OEM buyers
Q. What INCI names cover kombu extract for cosmetic labeling?
Both 'Saccharina Japonica Extract' and 'Laminaria Japonica Extract' are recognized INCI names — the species was reclassified from Laminaria to Saccharina, and both names remain in the CosIng inventory. Confirm with the supplier which name matches the COA before printing labels.

Q. Is heavy-metal (arsenic, iodine) testing standard for kombu cosmetic extracts?
Seaweed naturally accumulates iodine and trace arsenic, so cosmetic-grade kombu extract suppliers typically provide a heavy-metal panel and iodine content on the COA. Buyers should request these specifically and confirm compliance with destination-market cosmetic ingredient limits.

Q. Are Hokkaido-origin claims for kombu extract verifiable?
Hokkaido is the dominant Japanese kombu production region (Ma-kombu, Rishiri-kombu, Rausu-kombu, etc.), and origin documentation is typically supplied by reputable processors. Some Hokkaido kombu varieties are registered under the 農林水産省 (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) GI scheme for food use; cosmetic-extract origin claims should retain supplier provenance documentation.

Q. Is kombu extract compatible with anionic surfactants in body wash?
Yes, water-soluble kombu extracts are compatible with standard anionic, amphoteric, and non-ionic surfactant systems at 0.1–3% use levels. Polysaccharide-rich extracts may marginally increase viscosity, which can be useful or require thickener adjustment.
